SALTYCRACKERS · OTTER FOR ANDROID
Privacy Policy
Effective and last updated: July 23, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how SaltyCrackers handles information in Otter for Android (package name: com.saltycrackers.otterdiary). Otter is a local-first food diary.
1. Information Otter handles
Diary data you create may include meal names, notes, dates and times, photos, representative images, ratings, calories, water, weight, condition, My Foods lists, and app preferences. This information is stored locally in Otter’s private app storage.
If you enable step count, Otter requests read-only access to Steps through Health Connect. Step data is held in memory while the app is open. It is not written to the diary database, included in Otter backups, used for advertising, or sent to an Otter server.
When you contact support, your email address and the information you choose to send are processed by your email provider and ours so we can respond.
2. Photos, camera, sharing, and backups
Otter can use the system Photo Picker or camera only when you choose those actions. Selected or captured meal photos are stored in private app storage. Otter does not request broad access to your photo library.
Manual Android backups and portable imports use the system document picker. A backup may contain your diary, settings, and meal photos. The copy you save is controlled by you and by the storage provider you select. Otter does not upload it to an Otter-operated server.
Daily sharing creates a temporary image in private cache and sends it only to the Android Sharesheet. It is disclosed only to the recipient or service you select.
3. Advertising and consent
The free Android version may show one Google AdMob banner at the end of the main timeline. Google’s Mobile Ads SDK and User Messaging Platform may process consent status, IP address, advertising or app identifiers, device and app interaction information, diagnostics, and approximate location inferred from IP, subject to your region and consent choices.
Otter never provides meal content, photos, notes, weight, water, condition, My Foods, backup contents, or Health Connect data to advertising services. You can revisit available advertising privacy choices from Settings. Premium removes ads.
4. Purchases
Google Play processes the optional one-time Premium purchase. Otter receives the product and purchase state needed to unlock or restore ad removal, and stores a one-way fingerprint of purchase evidence in device-only storage. We do not receive your full payment-card details.
Purchase records are retained by Google according to Google Play’s terms and privacy policy. Premium status is separate from diary data and never deletes or changes your diary.
5. How information is used and shared
Information is used only to provide the diary, photos, statistics, preferences, Health Connect display, backup/import, sharing, purchase, advertising-consent, and support features described here; to protect data integrity; and to maintain app reliability.
We do not sell personal information. Otter currently has no account system, Otter-operated analytics service, or live Otter cloud sync. Google may process information for Play Billing, AdMob, UMP, and Health Connect under Google’s own policies. Information may also be disclosed when required by law.
6. Retention, deletion, and your choices
Local diary data remains until you delete it, clear the app’s data, or uninstall the app. Deleting a meal also removes its app-owned photo when safe to do so. Manual backup files remain wherever you saved them until you delete them from that provider.
You can decline or revoke camera and Health Connect access in Android settings, manage ad consent when the option is available, restore or remove Premium through Google Play, and choose whether to create, import, share, or retain backup files.
7. Children, security, and international processing
Otter is not directed specifically to children. A parent or guardian should supervise use where required by local law. Store target-audience and advertising settings are configured separately and must remain consistent with this policy.
We use Android app-private storage, scoped document/photo access, and data-minimizing permissions. No storage or transmission method is completely secure. Google and any service you choose for backup, sharing, or support may process information in other countries under their safeguards.
8. Changes and contact
We may update this policy when Otter’s features, service providers, or legal obligations change. The updated date will be shown on this page.
